When Katie Lavender visited the Twaabane group, in When Katie Lavender visited the Twaabane group, in a rural area west of Monze, community members spoke proudly about the young people who have grown up through the programme. They talked about children who have gone on to become teachers, police officers, army personnel and business owners, many of whom are now supporting their families. This is exemplified by Belinda. In 2016, when she was at school, Belinda drew a picture of herself becoming a nurse. She has now completed her training in nursing and midwifery and will graduate in November. A childhood ambition is becoming a profession. Belinda’s story reflects her own determination, as well as the importance of families, communities and educational support. Nsanzya is one of four students we supporting duri Nsanzya is one of four students we supporting during tertiary education. He is in his third year at university, studying accounting. His mother joined her local community group after the death of her husband. She remains an active member, supporting other families in her community. She is hugely proud of his achievements and expresses her gratitude for the support from BFZ. She says if just one member of the family can be educated to that level it will lift everyone else up. During his university holidays, Nsanzya visits schools to mentor other children and help them with applications for further education. He wants to give something back for the opportunity he received. By sharing his time and experience, he is helping other young people see what may be possible for their own futures. During her recent visit, Kate also met Miriam Mabita, one our past students. She received a government scholarship to study pharmacy. Education can change the direction of one person’s life, while the support of that person can go on to benefit many others.
Education has always been at the heart of BFZ’s wo Education has always been at the heart of BFZ’s work. From sponsoring individual children in our early years to supporting more than 90 children and young people today, BFZ has helped young people continue their education and pursue new opportunities. Our support includes: • School support and weekly wellbeing sessions • Tertiary education support for four alumni • Skills training, with recent cohorts of around 25 participants • Support shaped around the needs of each community and family Some young people are connected to BFZ for a few years. Others remain part of the programme for much longer. During our co-founder Katie’s recent visit to Zambia, former programme participants spoke about the opportunities education, training and wellbeing support have helped create. Several had gone on to secure employment and had taken time away from work to meet with her. Education can widen choices for young people, strengthen families and benefit whole communities.
Celebrating the opportunities created by 15 years Celebrating the opportunities created by 15 years of support At the beginning of her recent visit to Zambia, Brighter Futures Zambia co-founder Kate Lavender spent time with young people who have recently completed, or are progressing beyond, our programmes. They spoke about their experiences of school sponsorship, tertiary education, skills training and wellbeing sessions — and the opportunities these forms of support have helped create in their lives. They also shared honestly about the challenges they continue to face as young Zambians from communities affected by poverty. It was especially moving to hear that several had taken time away from work to meet Kate. The jobs they now have were opportunities they were able to pursue with support from Brighter Futures Zambia. Our aim is to help people have more choices and be better placed to take advantage of opportunities when they arise. Seeing the results of 15 years of community-led work encourages us to do more. Our trustees have embarked on various fundraising Our trustees have embarked on various fundraising events this year but we have to give a special mention to Kéké Chl who completed the formidable Diagonale des Fous across the mountainous terrain of Reunion Island. Not only did he complete the feat of endurance in 55 hours, he also raised more than £1,000 for BFZ and was still smiling at the end! Zambia is suffering from a severe drought that has Zambia is suffering from a severe drought that has destroyed over one million hectares of maize, nearly half of the nation's crop. President Hakainde Hichilema has declared it a national disaster and emergency. This crisis unfolds against a backdrop of pre-existing food insecurity and escalating inflation along with the threat to safe water access raises the likelihood of water-borne diseases such as cholera, as well as malaria. The UN has reported that Zambia possesses one of the highest rates of malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa, with 35% of children under five stunted and 4% acutely malnourished or wasted. Additionally, the stress from the drought is likely to increase gender-based violence and child marriage. Our mission in Zambia is thus underscored as we persist in supporting local communities and providing for the 90 children attending Makangala Pre-school, a task we can accomplish only with our donors' support. Kachiloma is a remote community that had been relu Kachiloma is a remote community that had been reluctant to participate in the programmes initially and Naomi, our BFZ coordinator, made the extra effort to onboard them into the programme. As time has passed and they have experienced the benefits of the programmes they have embraced them, building their own shelter to hold the weekly BFZ wellbeing sessions which have been so valuable to their community.

Special thanks to Rachel, a long term supporter who is living in Lusaka for a year with her family. She visited the school in March and sent us some wonderful photos with glowing reports of our community programmes. She was delighted to get involved in the classroom. Thank you Rachel for taking the time to visit with your family and for delivering some much needed supplies. At BFZ we want all the children and young people t At BFZ we want all the children and young people that we work with to realise their talents and achieve secure livelihoods. Our skills training programme offers young people in our community groups vocational skills and tools to work in their chosen trade. Orren trained in bricklaying and now works as a builder and Mwiinga completed the BFZ Skills Training Programme in 2023 and now works as an independent tradesman building and installing toilets and bathrooms in the local area

Belinda and Mutinta have started their second year at nursing school, Nysanza is in year two of a Finance degree and Christopher is in year three of his medical degree.

Cephas should have started four years ago, but missed out as his local school could not support his additional needs. He is now attending an inclusive boarding school and is loving both learning and moving independently in his very first wheelchair. With the help of our generous donors, we can support him and his mum and provide him with a wheelchair to help keep him mobile.
