Pre-School

Early year’s education is vital to children’s development, and that’s why we worked with Miyoba community to build a beautiful, brand new pre-school in a vulnerable, rural area where many children could not access primary school until as late as 8 or 9 years old. To address this, the local BFZ community groups were running makeshift pre-schools under the shade of a tree. The group gained the support of village leaders, who donated land and organised local people to gather raw materials to build the school. After much planning, discussions with the local department of education board, a huge amount of effort from all involved, and of course, our incredibly generous supporters, the BFZ Makangala Pre-School officially opened in April 2019.

Ninety children now attend the pre-school every day. Qualified early years’ teachers, who live in the Teachers’ house on the School grounds, lead the learning, with the support of volunteer teaching assistants from the local community. As well as qualified teachers, BFZ provides books, toys, games and learning materials to the pre-school.

The pre-school has become a community hub; BFZ run our weekly Wellbeing Sessions on the weekends, and we hold community-training events out of the school buildings.

Zambia has one of the highest rates of malnutrition and stunting in Sub-Saharan Africa. Malnutrition in childhood has a major impact on long-term health, development and well-being. That’s why it is so important for us to provide two meals per day to the young children that attend Makangala pre-school. More than ninety children enjoy a nutritious breakfast and lunch, cooked by community volunteers and provided thanks to the generosity of BFZ donors.

The pre-school borehole supplies the children, teachers and over 20 village households with fresh water. The water also serves a garden that grows vegetables, which supplement the pre-schoolers meals and fruit trees, which we planted around the school grounds.

“The food that BFZ provides for our learners is so important; it has all the three components they need; energy giving, body building and protective foods. It provides our learners with good health and encourages attendance; we have very few absentees at our School”. BFZ Pre-School teacher
